Mahindra Thar 2020,

Finally, the next generation Mahindra Thar was unveiled on 15 August 2020. After being teased for a couple of months, the Thar finally unveiled on the occasion of Independence Day. The Mahindra will offer Thar in both soft and hard top option in two different variants AX and LX. The AX is more of like a normal off-roader, while the LX is quite a premium version of Thar.

So the first question that comes in mind is, "How does it looks"?

At first glance, the exterior of all new Thar is tempting. The front of new Thar still comes up with seven-slat having plastic finish. The front bumper of Thar has fog lamps in it, and the DRLs with turn indicators are placed just over the fog lamps. Although the dimension of Thar is increased in length, width and in the wheelbase as well, but still the profile of Thar is pretty much the same when compared to its ancestors. While talking about rear side, the Thar now offers LED tail lamps with Thar badging engraved at center. New Thar 16-inch Steel wheels in AX variant and 18-inch 5-spoke alloy wheels in LX variant. The rear side of Thar still has that iconic tail mounted spare wheel.

The interior was always a point of concern in case of Thar, as most of us look as an off-roading vehicle, but this time Mahindra is offering some serious stuff in case of interior and now interior feels like a normal one. Yes, normal one, the interior of Thar had major updates still it feels like a leftover. In terms of quality, Mahindra did really well but still it is way behind from its competitor. The use of soft touch material is predominant in the cabin, and it feels premium.

Engine

The next-generation Thar comes up with two engine options. Firstly, the 2.2 liters Diesel engine that offers 130PS of power and 300 N-m of torque. While the other unit is 2.0 liter turbo petrol engine that produce 150PS of power and 300 N-m of torque The petrol engine comes with automatic transmission, which offers little boost in power. Both petrol and diesel engine come with the choice of 6-speed manual and automatic transmission with low range transfer case for terrain management.

Interior

The interior of next-generation Thar has some serious metamorphosis when compared to its ancestors. The cabin of Thar is now IP54 rated, which means it has water and dust resistance. Mahindra is also offering 7-inch touch screen infotainment system, which supports Apple carPlay, Android auto and plenty more features. The biggest upgrade to Thars cabin is the air conditioning unit, which is placed just below the infotainment system. Although the rear AC vent are still missing but addition of AC is big boost to Thar. The Thar has the same steering wheel as that of TUV300 with almost identical features.

Features

The Mahindra Thar is known as off-road king and hence it comes up with a lots of off-roading features. The Thar still comes with four wheel drive with electronic and mechanical locking differentials. The SUV is going to office standard safety features like ABS with EBD, Dual airbags but the headlamps are still halogen.

As we know, the Thar is the premium off-road offering from Mahindra and this time Mahindra has offered more than the expectation of Thar lovers. Thar still have all the old off-roading features with modern essentials onboard.

Mahindra is going to offer new Thar with six color options: Red Rage, Mystic copper, Galaxy Grey, Rocky Beige, Aquamarine and Napoli Black. The expected price of SUV is around 9.7 lakhs ex-showrooms and will reach showroom on 2nd of October. The Mahindra Thar will compete with likes of upcoming Maruti Jimmy and Force Gurkha.
